In the beginning sign painters mimicked sculpted letter forms particularly “Classic Roman” by adding depth to the lettering on surfaces such as Glass, Timber, Canvas, Plasterboard, Metal, Brick or any acceptable surface that a traditional artisan sign writer could create a bespoke custom made sign from.
In fact, today even with our numerous styles of alphabets, we still refer back to the Classic Roman alphabet when quality lettering is required to be Gold Leaf Gilded or traditionally hand painted.

The traditional bespoke sign writer will discuss the clients artwork requirements and projected ideas, then using skill & experience suggest various extensions such as Highlights, Shadows, Outlines, Colour combinations etc. that will enhance the original design simply by drawing with a pencil, without mirrors or high silk hats, but just skill incorporating hand & mind craftsmanship.
To explain... I was contacted by MYER Marketing & Creative via the Creative Director requesting a meeting to discuss their new “MyKids Emporium” hand lettered logo in the new extended store MYER Melbourne CBD. Australia.
In a short time & after several coffees. Mark & I were able to include several additions to the original artwork efficiently and economically.
